This won't be popular:
"Vehicles in London could soon be fitted with technology that would automatically slow them down if they break the speed limit."
But it'll also takes years to become a reality, if at all.

I find that a pretty scary concept. In theory it's good but it's also a bit TOO controlling. I imagine it will be a LONG time before this becomes reality.

Agreed - that sounds wildly controlling to me. And, without a doubt, people should take responsibility for their own driving.
I understand where this idea comes from - and fair enough that they want to slow down fast drivers to try and prevent accidents, but this seems a little extreme.

... but the public will rail against it and the car manufacturers will produce some studies that say it'll kill someone...
what's wrong with just taking responsibility for yourself?

If we're talking about breaking the speed limit in London, that's still quite difficult to do given the amount of congestion. However, it does raise the question of why cars are built to do 0-60 in 4 seconds, have top speeds of 150mph and all that nonsense.

Auto slow cars? How new of a concept is that really? I suppose I should take a look at the website and find out for myself. However, this does not seem like a new concept to me. Forgive me because I don’t mean to sound condescending. I was just wondering.
I heard for years that cars have been tracked. I also have heard that there is such thing as a car that will completely drive all by itself. Is this not popular in Europe? I always heard it was.
What do I know however? I am from the U.S.

I would have thought the traffic in London already did the job of slowing vehicles down quite effectively.... :) But seriously, I don't know how much value there would be in this. The article isn't completely clear though - we have lots of different speed limits, is the limiter just going to be for the highest limit, or is it going to dynamically adapt to the much lower urban limits? Limiters limiting the top speed are already standard on commercial vehicles, but a dynamic limiter on private vehicles seems a bit extreme.

I cannot see who will pay for these limiters. I can’t not see the manufactures installing it as a standard, they are trying to cut the cost of making cars. And I cannot see people paying for it if it was an extra like cruise control. I always wondered why a speed limit alert signal system was never considered. Something you could set electronically yourself for example if driving in London you could set it to 30mph and if you exceed it by 3mph you would be given a signal.

Or how about more of the signs that warn you when you're over the limit? I find those helpful.

I rather like the ones that give you a sad face when you're going too fast..... they certainly make you think. Although it might be the novelty element that means I like them!
