Would these actually sell? I don't like vegans just because they take things Way too far. this is the perfect example. Shoes are shoes in any shape or form. They are NOT a statment of your ecological ideaologies.

Too bad chard tastes so awful ... I can't force it down! Makes broccoli seem like a gourmet, tasty dish! LOL.

Really? What does it taste like?

I've never even heard of it, let alone tasted it. (My vegetable education is clearly lacking).

      Broccoli's great, though!

I should check out this chard - I never drink milk. I'm on the brink of osteoporosis, I'm sure of it.

I wouldn't be concerned about getting osteoporosis as a result of not drinking milk. In fact, you're better off not drinking milk. See http://www.babyreference.com/MilkingYourBones.htm

Don't forget that calcium is not the only thing our bones need. Calcium is nothing without magnesium. I believe Vitamin D is also an important one for bones.

Anyway, i ended up here, bcuz i don't know what chard tastes like, but i'm about to juice some along with some other vegs. So i'm curious as to what it tastes like, too. I've never had it.

Most people that I know would say that any type of organically grown veg is good for you (obviously) and the type of veg that you love is best for you cos eating anything you hate is a bad thing :)

I used to love broccolli. When I was pregnant I couldn't eat any veggies--and especially broccoli--Almost three years later I still detest brocolli. However it is spelled?

Chard is an excellent vegetable that's easy to prepare as well. Place in a glass dish and cover with wax paper. Steam in the microwave for 4 to 5 minutes. Remove sitr (it will be wilted) and add butter (optional) and lemon juice. Not sure I'd like it in a l;asagna though!

Hard to describe. Not like spinach, but sort of has that astringent pucker your mouth quality--but just slightly. Ummm. It tastes green? LOL. Sorry not much help.

There are two types red and green. Basically it looks like large leafy stems. The red chard has red stems. Sort of like collard greens--do you have those in the UK? I'm in the US.

Chard is very, very hard to get hold of here. It's irritating because you really need to go out of the way to look for it.

I have been thinking about this....could it be that chard is a vegetable that is native to America?

I've not seen it in UK shops - only in my organic box last year! (I did wonder what it was as it didn't look the same as spinach, but was obviously related to it)

I believe it is a cool weather plant. Did some research, it's native to Europe and Asia. It's actually a type of beet. Do you have beets in the UK?

Mustard greens? Or any other types of greens. Are those common in the UK? Chicory, endive? They are all in the mustard family (same as broccoli).

They're not widely available, from what I've seen. At the moment in the UK the main concern seems to be about getting schoolkids to eat more sensibly, which is all driven by a celebrity/TV chef.

Just seeing the amount of media attention that was given to it, you'd have to say that it'll take a celebrity TV chef to start using chard and mustard greens before they become widespread.

Ha - very true. That's just how media-controlled our lives are, though.

It's good that they're doing something about it anyway - even if it did take sodding Jamie Oliver to tell everyone to.

Didn't want to reveal the name for those who haven't clicked!

I hadn't even heard of this vegetable. I eat plenty of regular fresh vegetables but never (knowingly) this one. It looks like a Spinach/cabbage type plant, I will have to look out for some.

If you eat a well balanced and varied diet and plenty of veg you'll be ok with any veg really.

Yes, really eating any variety of veggies is good for you, whether it's peas, carrots, and spinach or something more exotic.

Well, there was chard in our box this week, so I've cooked it for the first time. I just used it like spinach, although it didn't go as soggy as spinach tends to (it was in a cheese sauce). It was fine - nothing spectacular.

The thing that I was impressed with was the colour - although the leaves were green, the stalks were a combination of bright red and yellow, so it was a really colourful plant. It's said you should try to eat all colours at a meal time, well we did just with the chard!

    Hi folks
its an interesting question, but are edible plants so much different from one another? what we do know is that the nutrient parts found consentrated in the fruit of a tree are also found dispersed sparsely in leaves, bark and branches, and if the bud of a tree is grafted onto another tree, it shoots forth branches and eventually gives the corresponding fruit, this is a clear indication that a bud contains all the elementary constituents essential for the formation of a given fruit, in other words that the part contains the whole. All edible plants consist of almost the same elements arranged in different proportions to form different compounds, they only differ in form colour and taste, so i imagine they are all equaly healthy.
