I came across this article earlier on Hugg.... (it originates on WhatCar)
"Owners of Britain's highest-polluting cars should pay up to £1800 in road tax in a bid to cut carbon dioxide emissions, says an influential committee of MPs.
...
Committee chairman Tim Yeo said: 'The Government should take much more decisive action to shift the balance of affordability in favour of trains, buses and lower-carbon cars and lorries.'"
Yet the transport minister says that the drivers of the fuel guzzling vehicles are already paying more for the extra fuel.
Personally I think this would be a very positive move - the higher level of £210 for road tax for the larger cars now does not put people off buying them - what's an extra £80 once a year? The cars normally cost significantly more, so if they can afford the car, they can afford the extra on the road tax.
This increase (along with other ideas mentioned in the article) should really make people think twice and look at smaller cars, alternative fuel or public transport. I just hope that the government seriously consider such a move.
