hello i just thought that people should be informed of this. Preschool puberty happens and happens too early. Even though preschool puberty is rare there ahve been clusters of children found with early puberty. Physicians beleive that although the casue is not certain children could be exposed to certain cosmetics, drugs, and or contaminants in the air which cause them to develope premature puberty. The majority of preschool puberty patients are exposed to drugs which were prescribed wrong. premature puberty can cause testosterone levels to multiply at an exceeding rate which is unhealthy for a preschooler. for more information you can visit the site http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/17/science/17pub...    It's an interesting subject, and one that links into a discussion I heard this morning about how childhood, in most sense, seems to end earlier than it used to (OK, cost of living tends to mean people move out of home later, but other than that most things happen earlier) - it's not just hormonal differences, but also the emotional differences - we're live in a much more "paranoid" society now than 50+ years ago (there were different challenges then) and a higher proportion of children are exposed to "adult" subjects at an earlier age through television and their peers. (drugs, violence, sex). I look around now and it seems that so many teenagers want to be adults before they get there in years, so dress accordingly (well, attempt to) that they seem to skip 5 years of their life.
   
   This subject also links into another point I often think about - in the last 60 years we've introduced to many new chemicals into our lives and who really knows the impact of them? Short term the impact may be minimal, but what about long term? Everything from household cleaners, to soap and man made fabrics in clothing... plus air "fresheners" (a pet hate of mine - what about opening a window?), preservatives, plastic containers.... and many other things. What are they doing to us?

   A couple of days ago I was having the discussion about how the emotional differences of the world have a direct effect on childhood and how we parent. When I was a kid we thought nothing about hopping on our bikes and disappearing to friend's house only to come back at dinnertime. Now I am very leery of letting my children do the same thing, because it's just not safe to do it. This certainly shows in the way the kids we know approach the world. A lot of children are extremely timid and the other end of the spectrum are those who tend to be aggressively precocious. Unfortunately I've yet to figure out a way to bring my own children up in a simpler environment.

      I agree with you 100% there. There are some children who are agressive as a consequence of changes in today's society and others that are "wrapped in cotton wool" and it's down to us as parents to do the very hard task of finding the middle ground - children who are aware of dangers, don't contribute to them yet can have fun and really "be kids".
      
      Unfortunately it's the minority that make this task harder, but awareness and desire to make things easier is increasing, so hopefully things are improving and we're achieving a greater majority.
