I certainly never expected that the Tour de France would be going past the end of my road, but it is!

On the 8th July 2007, the first leg of the Tour de France starts in London then travels through Dartford en route to Canterbury, the end of the stage.

From the Dartford Council website:

"The cavalcade that travels in front of the race is a huge procession of carnival-style decorated vehicles that gives out souvenirs, promotional items and other ‘goodies’ to spectators along the route, making the Tour de France a fun family event as well as a superb, free, sporting spectacle."

I can guarantee that there'll be lots on in Dartford - it seems to be a town where they'll make an effort for almost any event, so I'll keep my eyes out and keep the site up to date.

Start date Start date: Sun Jul 08, 2007
End date End date: Sun Jul 08, 2007

Well all of the signs are up about road closures (including blocking us in for the day, so we'll be watching then heading out on foot somewhere). More amazingly , the road works that have been going on for years are suddenly being finished off as that is part of the course.

I still can't believe that they have chosed this as the route to the coast, but there we go..... it's doing the area some good so I'm not complaining.

For information on road closures etc for the race, see:

and even more important is the information about when the race is going through an area:

Well, there was certainly a good turnout today for the race - there were lots of people lined along the roads right from the end of Burnham Road, into town and on up East Hill.

The cyclists themselves were through in no time at all. Howard snuck past without anyone really realising he was there as there were so many motor bikes around him. Then there were 4 or so in a small group, again surrounded, but then it was a swarm of them coming down the road together - certainly an impressive sight, but over in next to no time. Next time, I think I'll make sure I'm near the end of the leg to see some real action!
