OK, so I'm slightly biased in this discussion in that I orginally studied architecture and had a thing about buildings being to the benefit of people rather than just something to look pretty.
I've just heard a really interesting discussion on Radio 5 about the founding and work of Architecture for Humanity and some of the work that htey have done in the wake of many of the great disasters that have taken place in recent years.
Some of the stories and buildings he's talking about are amazing - not just creating things for people in the areas that are affected, but really looking at the situation - use the materials there (the rubble from destroyed buildings), meet the needs for use and cultural requirements.... I think it's something to read more about., I'm sure that there is a lot that we, the general public, can learn from them when we are looking at our own homes and what to do with them, never mind supporting the work of this group.
