"Market research firm Mintel expects ethical consumers to spend £2 billion on Fairtrade, organic and locally-sourced products this year, a rise of 62% since 2002. The company believes the market will be worth £547m by 2011. "
The problem is, are there enough companies out there producing fairtrade goods? If not, will it lead to a "diluting" of what Fairtrade means? I certainly hope not as Fairtrade is a much more global standard than organic, but if production can't meet demand, what else will happen?
The range of fairtrade goods available is increasing, with mainstream, high street stores such as M&S and TopShop having fairtrade clothing ranges and coffee shops, including Sainsburys, moving to fairtrade only tea and coffee. It's great as long as the principles are not effected and the suppliers continue to benefit.
