The Nethernet

At GameLayers we built the first PMOG, and it’s a web service from top to bottom.

PMOG exists as a web service, probably the first API-as-an-MMO, and it integrates into every other website using HTTP – one of the most prevalent technologies on the web, and also one that people foolishly continue to attempt to deprecate, but it’s here for a while longer yet, and rightly so.

The API is RESTful, so we were the first RESTful API into a virtual world, well, really the reflection of the virtual world and game that is the internet, but anyway. It’s an unofficial API, btw, but that’ll change. It’s both simple and textual, and I like it. The Alpha of PMOG was also one of the first attempts at integrating microformats into games, attempting to use microformats not only as a definition of identity but also as a definition of property, and I’d love that idea to come back into play.

Right now, though, we’re renaming PMOG to TheNethernet and we’ve built ourselves a platform we can continue to build on. And that platform is built on-top of another, the browser. One thing I realised over the last few years is that people love two things on the web – plugins and themes. Both, in general, are free, and both, in general serve to extend the community. As a company developing a Firefox plugin it’s exciting to be a part of this ecosystem, it’s going to be interesting to see where we can take it.
