Casual Games Du Jour

Fans of Woot (an online shopping website with the slogan, ‘One day, one deal’) and fans of Casual Games should unite…
Game du Jour, a website specifically for casual game enthusiasts, has launched. To quote the press release I’ve just received, “each day delivers a terrific bargain on a downloadable PC game. This is a great place for developers of casual games to get a rush of exposure and sales.”
No doubt there are some great partnering opportunities for Game du Jour, but the interesting part of this deal is the way it marries the best of Casual Games (the try-before-you-buy business model) with the drive and marketing of a deal a day website, which is inherently ‘buzz’-centric, fostering the need to impulse buy. I’d be surprised if some of the big portals don’t take the idea the same idea and use it to bulk-sell some of their more popular titles. There’s controversy ahead for these kind of websites, if they claim to ‘in it for the developers’, but time will tell.
