Suttree.com: Casual Games, Social Software by Duncan Gough

The Guardian gamesblog has an interesting article about the recent success of Buzz, the music quiz game. The most interesting part of which are the figures.

“Relentless Software has proven that originality still sells. Their innovative trivia quiz title - ‘Buzz!: The Music Quiz’-not only took a coveted spot (no.4) in the Full Price PlayStation 2 Christmas top 5 and no. 15 in the Full Price All Formats charts but was the ONLY original i.e. non-sequel, non-licensed game in the entire Top 20!”

Sadly it doesn’t take long for the Guardian to delve into some self-flaggelation of the ‘are games still crap?’ variety.

“I mean, are publishers really, really giving original ideas a chance these days”

Which, of course, is missing the point that, even with the support of Sony, this is a game with broad appeal, that can be played in small chunks, that is so simple you only need one (big, red) button to master it. A ‘casual game’ fighting off some stiff competition and making a very, very distinct mark on the charts over a busy period? I’m impressed. Well done to everyone invovled. I’m a big fan of music quizzes, my only concern for Buzz is that their database of questions (5,000 from what I’ve read), was just too small. In my experience, you can burn through that amount of questions in a number of games and players soon get bored of seeing the same questions over and over again.
