Shame shame time to leave me now, Shame shame you’ve had your fun

// Python, PyGame and me

WordSlider and Slider were two games I wrote about a year ago as an experiment to see how far I could get with PyGame.

After the inevitable ‘is PyGame fast enough‘ nonsense I came up with a couple of very good games.

Both games were devised by my wife, Jane, as she plays enough Collapse and WordSlinger to know what would make a good puzzle game. Slider was the original idea and it’s a pretty simple match-three game. WordSlider is the same principle applied to word building, rather than block matching.

Both work well but I’m not going to develop them further. I’ve written them in Flash and I’ll continue to develop new games that way. However, I will continue to use PyGame, wxWindows and Python to develop Windows applications as the infrastructure they provide is very, very good. Python seems to be losing a bit of ground at the moment and it’s weird to see how Ruby on Rails has caused it. The unspoken strength of Python is without a doubt its wxPython and win32 extensions. Seeing Slider and WordSlider running happily on my Mac and PC with no code changes is a real bonus too.

So, you can find the code and a setup file for both games here. Remember, it’s my first attempt at PyGame so there are loads of mistakes, but they’re all honest ones.
