Now why can't other countries / cities / states do this? I think it's great that a city is taking such measures. Accoridng to Miwa on Green Girls Global, Santa Monica, CA voted unanimously the other night to ban ALL polystyrene food packaging in the city. While other cities in California have bans focused on styrofoam (expanded polystyrene), Santa Monica is the first to also target the clear, hard “clamshell†sandwich and salad containers often used at take-out delis.
This is for the simple reason that they are trying to reduce the amount of waste that is produced that does not biodegrade. There are alternatives to polystyrene (cardboard and corn being two prime examples, both of which biodegrade and of course cardboard can be recycled) so more companies should look to use these than polystyrene - they wont be creating an eyesore forever!
