Darent Valley Hospital is holding another Stride for Life walk on Sunday, July 16. This is the third fun day and all the money raised will benefit the Darent Valley Hospital’s Cancer Fighting Fund. The sponsored walk has been marked out with four alternative walks for people to enjoy and you have been invited to register in the walk to help the worthy cause. You will be able to experience the sites of the old hospitals, steeped in history where prisoners of war were treated, as well as passing the site of the once-largest hospital in the country, The Southern. Enjoy remembering the days when people were employed to sew mattresses in the courtyards and a matron’s salary was £400 per year with an allowance of coal included. Smallpox and fever victims were treated in tents at the site of the Darent Valley Hospital.
