This is how it all works, a very good read.
"Carbon is the stuff of life. All living things are made of carbon. When we breathe, we take in oxygen, and release carbon dioxide. Plants do the reverse. They take in carbon dioxide, and use the carbon to make leaves, roots and stems, and release the oxygen."
