Has it come to this? From the BBC report:

"Places at some popular secondary schools in Brighton are to be allocated by lottery - the first time a council has backed such a change.

The move by the Labour-run local authority comes as the Daily Telegraph estimates 200,000 children may miss out on their preferred school this year."

I know that education is a hot topic and for many parent, myself included, it's a difficult and emotive subject. Personally, though, I feel that the standard of educaiton in schools is very much'of a muchness'. In general, a pupil at a 'good' school will receive a fairly good education and a pupil at a 'bad' school will still receive a fairly good education, but it's the extras - bullying, school sports, after school clubs, that make the real difference. With the exception of special needs and exceptionally bright children, school is going to be a difficult but rewarding experience for every pupil.

Having said all of that, though, I'm only scratching the surface and plenty of people appear to feel 'entitled' to only the best schooling their area can offer. Whilst I struggle to believe that ending up at a 'bad' school will result in a markedly different child, I do believe that school sports is the sign of a 'good' school. The point being, that bad education in this country is viewed as almost a disease or a handicap, something our children would struggle to recover from. So much for the Government's promise of 'education, education, education'.
